Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry and Medicine by Ray Freeman, X

Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry and Medicine by Ray Freeman, X
Magnetic resonance (MR) measures the tiny radio frequency signals emitted by the nucleus of the atom when living or inanimate material is placed in a magnetic field. On the one hand, these signals allow scientists to picture the architecture of molecules too small to be seen under the most powerful microscope, while on the other hand they give medical doctors a detailed picture of the internal structure of the human body without resorting to surgery of any kind. These two applications (high-resolution NMR spectroscopy and the MRI scanner) seem to be worlds apart, but the underlying physical principles are the same, and it makes sense to treat them together. Chemists and clinicians who use magnetic resonance have much to learn about each other's specialities if they are to make the best use of magnetic resonance technology. Many in the medical fraternity will benefit from a general appreciation of how high-resolution NMR has advanced our understanding of human biochemistry, diagnostic medicine, and the search for new drugs. A broad general understanding of magnetic resonance should prove of interest to doctors who make use of the MRI scanner, and to those of their patients who wish to learn more about these daunting machines, even if it is only the question of their own personal safety. At the other end of the spectrum, chemists and biochemists who use high-resolution NMR spectroscopy in their everyday investigations will benefit by broadening their horizons to cover the exciting new developments in MR imaging and in vivo spectroscopy, as one justification for their research is the eventual benefit to health care. Finally, anyone interested in how the human mind works (cognitiveneuroscience) will find a chapter devoted to the exciting new developments in functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. Each disparate group has something useful to learn from the others. The treatment is pictorial rather than mathematical.

Neodymium magnet - A neodymium magnet (also called a Neodymium Iron Boron magnet, or less specifically, called a rare-earth magnet) is a powerful magnet made of a combination of neodymium, iron, and boron — Nd2Fe14B. These magnets are very strong in comparison to their mass, but are also mechanically fragile and lose their magnetism at temperatures above 80 degrees Celsius.

Union County Magnet High School - The Union County Magnet High School (UCMHS) is a magnet school in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. The Magnet School has approximately 270 students.

Magnet Bay - Magnet Bay () is a shallow coastal indentation, 7 miles wide and receding only 2 miles, located 9 miles west of Cape Davis at the northwest side of Edward VIII Plateau, in Antarctica. The British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE), 1929-31, under Mawson, originally charted Magnet Bay as a larger bay extending from Cape Davis to Cape Borley, naming it after the vessel Magnet, in which Peter Kemp first sighted land in this vicinity in 1833.

Single-molecule magnet - A single-molecule magnet is an object that is composed of molecules each of which behaves as a magnet. To be a single-molecule magnet, the object must show a net magnetic spin and have no magnetic interaction between molecules.

Irresistible Attraction: Secrets of Personal Magnetism Technology There are three primary types of maglev technology: One that relies on superconducting magnets (electrodynamic suspension), one that relies on superconducting magnets (electrodynamic suspension), one that relies on superconducting magnets (electrodynamic suspension), one that relies on feedback controlled electromagnets (electromagnetic suspension), and a newer, potentially more economical system that uses permanent magnets (Inductrack). The effect of a powerful magnetic field is required to levitate a massive train, so conventional maglev research uses superconductor research for an efficient electromagnet. Inductrack uses Halbach arrays for stabilization. In the prototype, the permanent magnets are in a passive electromagnetic array by permanent magnets. Whilst the very high speeds with reasonable energy consumption and noise levels (systems have been proposed that operate at up to 650 kilometres/hour (404 miles/hour), which is far faster than is practical with conventional rail transport).
